On… how NOT TO respond to mental illness.

November 23, 2016

This got me so mad that I had to rant about it.

In response to the recent news that Kanye West was hospitalized after his Sacramento stop for his The Life of Pablo Tour, Piers Morgan – resident scumbag of the UK – wrote an op-ed for the Daily Mail saying that, “Once a fame-addict like Kanye started mainlining with the Kardashians it was only a matter of time before he overdosed.”

THIS IS NOT OK.
Anyone can struggle with mental health – including someone who is ridiculed as an egomaniac.
He’s the reason why there’s stigma around mental health. He’s the reason why people suffer alone instead of reaching out to others.
Shaming someone for being hospitalized is not ok. People who are mentally ill don’t deserve to be used as a punching bag.

I don’t want to armchair diagnose Kanye, but we have to empathize with his own struggles with his mental health. I feel a punch in the gut understanding what Kanye might be going through right now. All I can feel for him is empathy.

It is not ok to treat someone like this and hit them at their most vulnerable. I’ve had my own struggles with mental health. My friends have too. Kanye is human too and can be struggling as well. It’s good that he’s reaching out. I hope he’s getting the help that he needs.
